No sé el tiempo que llevo en esto y lo he oído mil veces: la carrera más dura del mundo. Y lo he oído en múltiples distancias y modalidades, incluso comparativas: es XXXXX más dura que YYYYY ???. Pero si sacamos de la ecuación la variable belleza, Amazean Jungle by UTMB está en el top 3 de carreras más duras del circuito UTMB sin duda y del mundo pues no puedo decirlo porque no lo controlo.
Amazean jungle es especial, es una joya dentro de la corona del circuito UTMB World Series. No hay nada igual, os podrán gustar más otras, serán más rápidas, será más fácil el viaje… lo que queráis. Pero esta carrera es diferente, desde todos los puntos de vista. Cuesta llegar, porque el aeropuerto más cercano está a 5h aproximadamente (el año que viene esto cambiará) pero una vez que llegas, viajas a otra cosa. No soy sospechoso de estar enamorado de Tailandia ni de haberme recorrido el país casi en su totalidad, pero Betong no lo conocía. Betong es Tailandia porque es así, pero está tan cerca de Malasia que tiene matices… además la comunidad china se hace notar. No tiene una parte como tiene Bangkok o Chiang Mai Chinatown, pero el rojo y dorado se ven por la ciudad de manera recurrente.
Los pueblos en Tailandia no suelen ser muy ordenados urbanísticamente hablando, esto es un eufemismo de que son un caos, pero Betong tiene un orden, las calles son rectas y los cruces tienen ángulos rectos, hay rotondas y los templos no están cada dos pasos… Una ciudad que parece que se paró en el tiempo hace ya unos años. La arquitectura de sus hoteles de alto standing recuerdan que tuvieron una época mejor. Mientras que dos pasos más lejos tienes una cafetería más propia de un barrio hípster que de lo que le rodea. Con un túnel que atraviesa la ciudad el cual es punto neurálgico de la carrera, Betong parece un pueblo sacado de la Europa de los 80 pero en Asia. Es fascinante en si misma este pueblo.
Dicho esto, la carrera tiene una gran impacto en la sociedad de la zona, aquí si que se ve un retorno claro de una prueba internacional en un pueblo pequeño. La comunidad se volcó con la prueba, podría acercarse a una fiesta regional en cualquier pueblo de España, la salida de las 100M fue espectacular… pero la carrera popular que se celebró la noche del sábado fue algo increíble, no sé tipo San Silvestre vallecana… una cosa que me dejó perplejo. Además, la organización en lugar de hacer una avituallamiento post-carrera (que lo hubo con bebidas) nos dio una tarjeta con la cual podíamos pagar en los establecimientos locales y así esos establecimientos también tenían un retorno económico directo. Un acierto
El transcurso de la prueba para un lector medio carece de interés una vez que se conoce el desenlace. Pongo aquí los resultados de las 100M que fueron 140km para que podáis ver la dureza de la misma. A destacar los 100km femeninos… hay una denuncia iniciada por el corredor japones ante una posible infracción por ayuda externa al ganador de la prueba y tras quedar en nada, y tras quedar en nada se presento una segunda entre tres corredor@s de los 5 primeros y un entrenador que si prospera podríamos estar ante una victoria femenina scratch.

Resumen: Un pueblo volcado, un recorrido con una dureza propia de las carreras más duras del circuito (si no la más), un viaje que en si mismo es una aventura y una oportunidad de salirte de la zona de confort del circuito UTMB.

I don’t know how long I’ve been doing this and I’ve heard it a thousand times: the hardest race in the world. And I’ve heard it in multiple distances and modalities, even comparative: is XXXXX harder than YYYYYYYY ???. But if we take out of the equation the beauty variable, Amazean Jungle by UTMB is in the top 3 of the hardest races of the UTMB circuit without doubt and of the world because I can’t say because I don’t control it.
Amazean jungle is special, it is a jewel in the crown of the UTMB world series circuit. There is nothing like it, you may like others more, they will be faster, it will be easier to travel… whatever you want. But this race is different, from all points of view. It’s hard to get there, because the nearest airport is about 5 hours away (next year this will change) but once you arrive, you travel to something else. I am not suspected of being in love with Thailand nor of having traveled the country almost in its entirety, but Betong I did not know. Betong is Thailand because it is, but it is so close to Malaysia that it has nuances…plus the Chinese community is noticeable. It doesn’t have a part like Bangkok or Chiang Mai Chinatown has, but the red and gold is seen throughout the city on a recurring basis.
Towns in Thailand are not usually very orderly urbanistically speaking, this is an understatement that they are chaotic, but Betong has an order, the streets are straight and the crossings have right angles, there are traffic circles and temples are not every two steps … A city that seems to have stopped in time a few years ago. The architecture of its high standing hotels reminds us that they had a better time. While two steps away you have a cafeteria more typical of a hipster neighborhood than of what surrounds it. With a tunnel that crosses the city which is the neuralgic point of the race, Betong looks like a town taken from the Europe of the 80’s but in Asia. It is fascinating in its own right, this town.
That said, the race has a great impact on the society of the area, here if you see a clear return of an international event in a small town. The community went all out for the race, it could approach a regional festival in any town in Spain, the start of the 100M was spectacular … but the popular race that was held on Saturday night was something incredible, I do not know type San Silvestre vallecana … one thing that left me perplexed. In addition, the organization instead of making a post-race refreshment (which there was with drinks) gave us a card with which we could pay in local establishments and thus these establishments also had a direct economic return. A success
The course of the race is of no interest to the average reader once the outcome is known. I put here the results of the 100M which was 140km so that you can see how hard it was. To highlight the women’s 100km … there is a complaint initiated by the Japanese runner for a possible infringement for external assistance to the winner of the race and after being nothing, and after being nothing a second complaint was filed between three runners of the top 5 and a coach that if it succeeds we could be facing a female scratch victory.
