No seré sospechoso de no alabar esta prueba… no seré sospechoso de decir que era un aprueba que estaba al nivel de los grandes eventos mundiales. Lo he dicho, lo he visto, lo he escrito y me ratifico. Pero el giro que ha dado en 2023 es muy interesante.
Mi primera gran prueba internacional fue el Ironman de Frankfurt en 2009. Para mi ese era el listón… Y que no le siente mal a nadie, las carreras de montaña estaban lejos de esos estándares. No se si UTMB en Chamonix era así, porque no he estado nunca y tengo la fea costumbre de hablar solo de lo que sé. Con el paso del tiempo y la globalización del Trail running esto ha cambiado, y no digo que no haya pruebas de menor empaque organizativo que sean super atractivas. Ya el año pasado pudimos ver en Val de Arán una prueba que podría ser homologable a cualquier evento mundial, porque es así, luego habrá más o menos piedras o más o menos calor… pero el despliegue que allí vi lo dejan claro.
En todo este mundo globalizado, en la otra punta del mundo un grupo de tailandeses iban a organizar el primer Major Asia pacífico del circuito UTMB World Tour. Las expectativas estaban altas y más cuando al país se desplazaron la plana mayor de UTMB, algunos incluso se pusieron dorsal en la prueba reina. En esta edición 2022 se produjeron cambios respecto a la edición del 2021, todos ellos buscando la mejora para el atleta. La organización se examinaba.
La prueba fue un éxito, tanto a nivel organizativo, de seguridad y deportivo, siendo Chiang Mai el epicentro del Trail asiático (y sin contar con el grueso de los corredores chinos). Pero umm había algo que no sé… la prueba era redonda desde todos los prismas… tenía algo que la diferenciaba de las pruebas europeas o americanas. Pero yo que he estado más veces en Chiang Mai que en Barcelona, había veces que no sabía si estaba en Tailandia o en otro país del sudeste asiático. Incluso el cuartel general, siendo precioso quedaba un poco a desmano.
Si del 2021 al 2022 se produjeron cambios. En 2023 estamos ante la que puede ser la gran prueba del año en el circuito UTMB. Así de claro. Se ha cambiado la salida, llevándola a la capital de la provincia y a 10min del aeropuerto internacional. Además de facilitar el transporte pone en valor la cultura, gastronomía, arquitectura y demás atractivos turísticos de Chiang Mai la llamada rosa del norte. Hoteles y demás agentes se verán favorecidos. Pero además el recorrido cambia y esto es lo más importante.
Como decía antes, una vez que te pones el dorsal en otras ediciones, no sabíamos si estamos en Chiang Mai en Malasia o en Ratchanburi… las señas de identidad de la provincia quedaban atenuadas por la propia dureza y si que es cierto que los avituallamientos estaban en pueblos y permitían conocer la cultura de las diferentes etnias que allí habitan, mi sensación era que la experiencia no era completa. Ahora se pasará por los mejores lugares o lugares turísticos… por lo que podrá reconocerse una prueba con sello propio y además conocer una parte de Chiang Mai que solo corriendo se puede descubrir. Un acierto.

I will not be suspicious of not praising this test… I will not be suspicious of saying that it was a test that was at the level of the great world events. I have said it, I have seen it, I have written it and I ratify myself. But the turn it has taken in 2023 is very interesting.

In this globalized world, on the other side of the world a group of Thais were going to organize the first Major Asia Pacific of the UTMB World Tour circuit. Expectations were high and even more so when the UTMB’s senior staff travelled to the country, some of them even took their bibs on the main event. In this 2022 edition there were changes compared to the 2021 edition, all of them looking for the improvement for the athlete. The organization was examined.
The race was a success, both organizationally, safety and sporting, Chiang Mai being the epicenter of the Asian Trail (and not counting the bulk of Chinese runners). But umm there was something that I don’t know… the race was round from all points of view… it had something that differentiated it from the European or American races. But I have been more times in Chiang Mai than in Barcelona, there were times when I didn’t know if I was in Thailand or in another Southeast Asian country. Even the headquarters, being beautiful, was a bit far away.
If from 2021 to 2022 there were changes. In 2023 we are facing what could be the great event of the year on the UTMB circuit. It’s that clear. The start has been changed, taking it to the capital of the province and 10min from the international airport. In addition to facilitating transportation, it highlights the culture, gastronomy, architecture and other tourist attractions of Chiang Mai, the so-called rose of the north. Hotels and other agents will be favored. But also the tour changes and this is the most important thing.
As I said before, once you put on the bib in other editions, we did not know if we were in Chiang Mai in Malaysia or in Ratchanburi … the hallmarks of the province were attenuated by the very hardness and if it is true that the refreshment posts were in villages and allowed to know the culture of the different ethnic groups that live there, my feeling was that the experience was not complete. Now you will pass through the best places or tourist sites … so you can recognize a test with its own stamp and also know a part of Chiang Mai that only running can be discovered. A success.
